Chapter Fifteen

Seeing Junior being led away by the local authorities brought back embarrassing memories of being arrested in front of his colleagues. Edmund shook his head at how blindly he’d believed Reyna, his former lover, after she told him everything he wanted to hear.

You’re so much smarter than Peter.

You’re so much better than your sisters.

You’ve got a great financial portfolio.

She enchanted him with her sexual creativity and plied him with homemade sweet, chewy candies as a way to express her affections, all the while, stealing money from the practice using his login information that he’d so willingly told her.

“What a witch,” he mumbled as he walked through the aisles of the pharmacy.

Yet, it had been his own ego that had been his downfall. Despite the warning from his siblings, he refused to remove blinders when it came to Reyna.

For too long, he’d wanted someone to see him for who he was and not anyone’s younger sibling or business partner.

He wanted a gorgeous woman on his arm. The kind of beauties his brother, Peter, so easily attracted.

To feel like a king when he walked in a room, not the court jester and not the spare. “Should have known it was too good to be true.”

As soon as he realized what she’d done, the wolves had already begun to circle. He’d turned her in, but it had almost been too late. For months, he fought to prove his innocence and that ruined his professional reputation and credibility.

To their credit, his siblings stood united with him, even bailing him out when he’d been arrested. His stepfather had been a silent supporter and for all of them, Edmund would be forever grateful, but damn, if he didn’t feel layers of shame that threatened to bury him.

Marietta had been the unexpected answer to his prayers, but the town had given him more than a professional second chance.

The possibility of learning to trust again.

Jade. What she had to be going through right now with her brother. Even though Junior was obviously guilty, the embarrassment of him being arrested in broad daylight had to have stung.

Taking his phone out, he checked for texts. His shoulders slumped when the screen came up empty.

He’d hoped she would have reached out to him by now, but he could understand her not wanting to. Gathering a few more items in the pharmacy, he tossed in a couple of chocolate bars, the same kind of chocolate he’d seen the empty wrappers of in her living room.

Double-checking his items, he began to head toward the front, but stopped when a hushed voice mentioned Jade’s name.

“It was so sad. How Junior Carter treated his sister.”

Immediately his ears perked up. Moving silently, he made his way to the front as they spoke.

“Oh, Betty. I can’t imagine.”

Looking around the corner, two older women each with their elbows on the counters, faced each other.

Those had to be the town gossips Logan mentioned. They appeared to be having a serious talk about Junior’s meltdown, his transfer to county lockup, and how Jade couldn’t afford to pay for bail.
